Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero (D) of Guam embarked on her inaugural official visit to Taiwan from May 25 to May 31, 2025. During this visit, she met with President Lai Ching-te to reinforce the longstanding partnership between Guam and Taiwan and to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in tourism, healthcare, and economic development.
President Lai welcomed Governor Leon Guerrero and her delegation at the Presidential Office on May 27, acknowledging Guam’s strategic significance as the closest United States territory to Taiwan and its role as a vital link in Taiwan-US collaboration. He highlighted the recent inauguration of direct United Airlines flights between Taipei and Guam as a step forward in bolstering bilateral engagement. President Lai also emphasized the shared Austronesian heritage and democratic values that unite the two regions, expressing optimism about future collaborations in areas such as aquaculture, food processing, hydroculture, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and recycling.
Governor Leon Guerrero expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s hospitality and reaffirmed Guam’s commitment to expanding partnerships in tourism, healthcare, and innovation. She noted Taiwan’s advancements in education, agriculture, artificial intelligence, and technology, and emphasized Guam’s interest in collaborating on initiatives that enhance quality of life and drive economic growth.
The governor also introduced members of her delegation, which included officials from various sectors such as the Guam Visitors Bureau, Guam International Airport Authority, Guam Economic Development Authority, and the University of Guam. She underscored the importance of building a stronger Guam-Taiwan relationship through continued cooperation on shared goals and challenges.
This visit marks a significant step in strengthening the ties between Guam and Taiwan, focusing on mutual interests and collaborative opportunities that benefit both regions.
