As federal lawmakers continue negotiations on key provisions of the upcoming budget reconciliation package, AARP deployed staff and volunteers from across the United States and its territories to Capitol Hill on June 25, 2025, urging congressional leaders to prioritize the needs of older Americans.
In temperatures exceeding 110 degrees, hundreds of AARP representatives held more than 330 meetings with members of Congress from both major parties. The coordinated effort focused on three main areas: protecting Social Security, defending access to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and increasing support for the country’s estimated 48 million unpaid family caregivers.
Among those participating was Troy A. de Chabert-Schuster, AARP Virgin Islands State Director, who met with Delegate Stacey Plaskett (D) of the United States Virgin Islands. “As always, she completely supports all of AARP’s requests on behalf of the older population,” de Chabert-Schuster said following the meeting.
Nancy LeaMond, Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer of AARP, emphasized the urgency of the visit. “Every time we come to Capitol Hill, we bring the power of our members with us,” LeaMond said. “We’ve recently made real progress—like stopping cuts to Social Security’s phone support that would have created major hurdles for older adults. Today, we’re amplifying the voices of more than 110 million Americans age 50 and older who expect action on what matters most.”
AARP has long been a vocal advocate for older residents across the United States and its territories. As budget talks continue, the organization is seeking to ensure that essential programs and services for aging populations remain protected and well-funded.
