Delegates are entrusted to serve the people’s interests. In fact, the definition of delegate is “a person acting for another.” Although US territorial delegates are not in the Senate, they are voted into the House of Representatives. They are seen as those who preserve the law. Yet, in recent news, a former US territorial delegate was detained.
On July 7, at 2:23 am, former Delegate Michael San Nicolas (D) of Guam was arrested. He was involved in a car crash around Santos Hill and Gun Beach Road. His Prius was flipped on its side, forcing him to crawl out of the vehicle. Officers at the scene took notice of his bloodshot eyes, failed sobriety tests, and even the smell of alcohol on his breath. Former Delegate San Nicolas (D) of Guam later disclosed that he drove under the influence of alcohol and was distracted by his phone. He was charged with a DUI by law enforcement.
“Unable to maintain balance, San Nicolas (D) of Guam was unable to complete the walk and turn test or the one-leg stand,” the complaint from police said.
Despite his offense, many individuals only seemed to focus on his health. On Facebook, many have commented their gratitude that he is unharmed.
“At least you’re ok, and of course someone out there will judge you, but we won’t forget what you did when you help the People of Guam,” said user Dianne Sales. “Our prayers go out to you.”
“At least you didn’t get seriously hurt, and that you didn’t hit another car,” user Norma Balajadia said. “Guam still needs you.. I still believe in you.”
In contrast, some have voiced their disapproval of his actions.
“Taxpayers are paying him, and he is running away to Maryland?” user GuamIsMyHome said. “Probably cause he can drink there and not be monitored.”
Former delegate San Nicolas (D) of Guam was released on a $1,000 bond. This was given as he had no prior record or even evidence to believe he would not come to court appearances. His hearing is to take place on July 24. Former Delegate Michael San Nicolas (D) of Guam has requested to visit his family in Maryland, which authorities have permitted.
Former Delegate Michael San Nicolas (D) of Guam has violated the law, yet not all are angry. While some people voice their frustration, others are still showing support, more concerned about his safety as opposed to his DUI. Former Delegate San Nicolas (D) of Guam was once a representative for the entire population of Guam. He was entrusted to serve his people and give Guam a voice in the House of Representatives. However, with this DUI, the former delegate of Guam has set himself against several individuals. This story is not only heard and judged by those who live in Guam, but by people located around the globe.
