191 weeks down, 16 weeks to the presidential election.

The AoC Checklist features clear, well-researched actions for Americans who value democracy, equality, voting, and respect. To stay engaged through challenging times, we practice gratitude, self-care, and celebration.

I value equality.

Action 1: Support people seeking safety and refuge in the U.S. to the United States’ asylum system by Wednesday, July 15th at 11:59pm EST[h/t AILA]

Submit a written comment in your own words: Go to Regulations.gov via the blue “Comment Now!” button, stating why you oppose the proposed asylum changes.

  • The Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have published a new regulation that drastically limits refugees’ and asylum seekers’ ability to obtain asylum in the U.S.
  • Our nation has a constitutional responsibility to accept individuals and families from other countries who are seeking refuge and safety.
  • These proposed changes will make it nearly impossible for individuals fleeing threats such as domestic violence, “honor” crimes, and harms associated with gender identity and sexual orientation to obtain humanitarian relief.
  • The regulations would allow judges and asylum officers to more easily throw out asylum requests, leaving those applying for asylum with little chance of due process.
  • The proposed changes include arbitrary eligibility criteria, including limitations to what defines “persecution,” more stringent application submission timelines, and limitations based on an asylum-seeker’s number of layovers on the way to the U.S.
  • A representative from the American Immigration Council concludes: “The goal of this asylum regulation—far from reshaping the system to improve it—is to make asylum impossible to win.”

Action 2: Advocate for the health, safety, and well-being of families. [h/t National Domestic Workers AllianceRAICES]

Call or Write: Your two senators and one House rep (look up), or sign the Families Belong Together petition.

Script: Hello. I’m calling from [ZIP] to express my concern about the possible separation of detained children from their parents due to COVID-19.

While I support the judge’s order to release all children who have been held in ICE Family Residential Centers more than 20 days, I’m worried that this will result in parents being forced to sign guardianship documents without legal counsel or choose between detention with their children or the release of their children alone. I am asking [NAME] to join their peers in urging ICE to release families together to waiting sponsors or family members.
