US Territories' news week in tweets
With Hurricane Fiona wreaking havoc on Puerto Rico, President Biden issued an emergency declaration to assist the territory in disaster relief efforts.
Major airways issued travel waivers for passengers expected to travel to the US Virgin Islands. All flights scheduled for September 18 were canceled for both airports in the territory.
The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) announces $52.5 million in grant funding for suicide prevention efforts to 80 awardees. One of these community organizations that the VA is partnering with is located in American Samoa.
With the Northern Mariana Islands easing up on Covid-19 restrictions, the territory saw a large spike in tourists. In August, the territory had over 10,000 people visit (compared to only 551 in August 2021).
After a 30-year absence, Guam residents could expect to find the return of the Guam Kingfishers in the wild. Scientists are attempting to aid the critically-endangered species after they were extirpated from Guam due to invasive snakes.
