Camacho Ada campaign calls for Leon Guerrero to end COVID-19 State of Emergency

On October 20, 2022, the Camacho Ada Campaign issued a press release about the recent COVID-19 Data/Surveillance Report from the Guam Department of Public Health. They specifically call for Governor Leon Guerrero to end the COVID-19 State of Emergency. The press release states “Former Governor Felix Camacho and Senator Tony Ada renew their class on Governor Lou Leon Guerrero to end the COVID-19 public health emergency for Guam immediately.”

The campaign claims that according to DPHSS, the test rates and hospital surge levels remain low. They also note the wide accessibility of prevention methods such as COVID-19 vaccinations, boosters, testing, and treatments.

The media statement mentions the success Guam has had in reducing case levels. They say, “We have all seen overall case data of COVID-19 come down over the past eight months, 90% of the Guam population have taken US Food and Drug Administration-authorized SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and related booster shots.”

The campaign shares a strong message directed at the Governor herself, saying, “Governor Leon Guerrero please stop your political response to this public emergency. Your continued declaration of a state of emergency has not been as effective as your Administration has continued to say to residents. The declarations should have been utilized to better protect our island.”

The candidates urged the governor to “use some common sense” and “end this emergency and help return Guam back to normal.”

Camacho and Ada are using this alleged mishandling of pandemic news to push their campaign amongst voters. The campaign claims that dragging out the state of emergency is not a public health response but a “political response.”

Camacho said “the emergency declaration, no governor has ever had it for this long. They have not included the Guam legislature in this. It has been a simple matter of letting me be able to circumvent the procurement process.”
