GiveDirectly, the nonprofit directly providing relief to victims of Hurricane Fiona

by | Nov 23, 2022 | Civic and Community Engagement, Puerto Rico | 0 comments

Natural disasters cause great damage, not only to the environments in which we live but they can also cause great bodily harm. They put many at risk of physical injury and are sometimes even fatal. Hurricane Fiona displaced thousands of people when it made landfall in September. Even though we are weeks out since the passage of hurricane Fiona, Puerto Rico remains in need of basic items like food, water, and medicine. Low-income families have been directly affected and are struggling due to the recent storm.

Fortunately, GiveDirectly is sending money directly to hurricane survivors, having raised over $3 million. Several thousand families will be impacted by these donations, especially those hit the hardest by the storms. At this time GiveDirectly is distributing $700 payments to those impacted by the hurricane. These payments cover the cost of items like food, first aid supplies, toiletries, gas, radios, and diapers.

GiveDirectly is a nonprofit that has delivered more than $580 million to over 1.37 million people, most of them among the world’s poorest. This is what makes GiveDirectly so unique, it allows the donor to send money directly to those in need with no strings attached. They accept PayPal, checks, wires, stocks, cryptocurrencies, all major credit and debit cards, along with much more all through their highly secure donation page.

GiveDirectly has established operations in Kenya, Liberia, Uganda, Nigeria, Mozambique, Malawi, Morroco, Rwanda, DRC, Yemen, and the USA. These operations allow them to impact impoverished communities in a variety of ways. Delivering cash to these individuals allows them to invest in creative ways, like tin roofs or chickens. Through GiveDirectly’s programs, outreach and fundraising, countless lives are changed for the better in large and small ways.

The current GiveDirectly donation goal for the US Hurricane Emergency Relief is $5,900,000, and they are very close to reaching this goal. To provide much-needed hurricane relief to those in need you donate to GiveDirectly.
