US territory voters prefer Harris over Trump in poll

by | Nov 5, 2024 | Elections, Headlines, Polls | 0 comments

Residents of the United States unincorporated territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands favored Kamala Harris and Tim Walz over Donald Trump and JD Vance in the October 2024 Elections Territorial Poll. The Harris-Walz ticket received the support of 59.6% of poll respondents, compared to the 32.9% who favored the Trump-Vance ticket. Our poll included this question despite the fact that residents of the US territories cannot vote for the US President, as an exercise to bring awareness of sentiments in each territory about national issues.

Despite the overall wide margin for Harris, there are a couple of territories in which Trump has significant support. American Samoa was the only place where the Trump ticket came out ahead, commanding the support of 71.4% of respondents. The Republican ticket also came close in the Northern Mariana Islands where Democrats had the support of 45.5% of voters compared to the 42.4% who supported Republicans. For the Democrats, the US Virgin Islands registered as their best state with 76.9% of respondents supporting Harries. In Puerto Rico and Guam, respondents favored the Democratic ticket two to one compared to the Republican one.

The overall results match the sentiments expressed by respondents in the favorability ratings question, with only Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party receiving overall higher favorable ratings.

Some territories, like Puerto Rico and Guam, will be conducting straw polls for the US presidential race, which helps inform us about how these jurisdictions would vote if they had full voting rights. Our election center will have the results of those votes once available.
