Bad Bunny learns how to dance salsa in the BAILE INoLVIDABLE music video.
Editor’s note: Bad Bunny is not just a global music star; he is a cultural and political force whose work reflects how many Puerto Ricans experience identity, migration, power, and belonging. Ahead of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance, Pasquines is publishing a short series of essays, explaining songs like BAILE INoLVIDABLE from across his discography for audiences who may be encountering his music — and its meaning — for the first time. We will be unpacking individual songs and what they mean to the writers who live with their echoes — on the islands and in the diaspora. Through music, memory, and context, these pieces explore Puerto Rico as lived reality, not metaphor.
BAILE INoLVIDABLE is one of my favorite songs from the DtMF album because it holds many meanings for me. While the title translates to “unforgettable dance,” its significance goes far beyond the literal. What I love most is that, while many may interpret it as the unforgettable dance shared with a significant other, it’s also deeply rooted in the love, sounds, movement, and spirit of our culture.
It speaks to the moment where we first learned to dance to the last dance we may have shared with a loved one. To me, it also represents those moments when the entire family is together—laughing, partying, and celebrating—without knowing it might be the last time before someone leaves the island for the States or elsewhere in search of opportunities that can feel so hard to find back home.
At its core, BAILE INoLVIDABLE feels like a dance of resilience and resistance within Puerto Rico. As part of the diaspora, moving to the States as a child, returning to the island to live for a bit, and then leaving again, the song carries a deep sense of nostalgia for me. It holds the memories of what was, alongside the lingering thoughts of what could have been.
That’s the beautiful thing about art: it can mean something different to everyone. To me, BAILE INoLVIDABLE represents all of these layers. And while I don’t know if I’ll ever permanently return to the island where I first opened my eyes, I know this—I will continue dancing the dance of my culture and my identity—an act of resistance and resilience, never minimizing my roots. I will do everything in my power to pass it on to the people I love, especially future generations, so they always know where their heart and soul come from—from this island of enchantment—full of magic, resilience, and an unforgettable dance I will always carry with me. 💃🇵🇷
