The Salvation Army St Thomas Corps has announced the opening of a new community food pantry at the Winston Raymo Recreation Center, expanding access to food assistance for residents facing financial hardship.

According to The Salvation Army, the pantry is intended to serve individuals and families experiencing food insecurity due to job loss, rising living costs, medical expenses, or emergency hardship. The pantry will distribute staple grocery items and essential food supplies to eligible households based on availability.

Major Tim Lavenbein, Corps Officer of The Salvation Army St Thomas Corps, said the pantry responds to growing needs in the community.

“This food pantry is a direct response to the growing needs we see every week in our community,” Lavenbein said. “No one should have to choose between paying rent, keeping the lights on, and putting food on the table.”

Major Migdalia Lavenbein, also a Corps Officer, said the initiative is designed to provide assistance with dignity and respect, encouraging residents in need to schedule an appointment.

Access to the pantry will be by appointment only. Applicants must be residents of St Thomas, demonstrate financial hardship or food insecurity, provide household size information, and present a valid photo ID. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or official mail, is required. Additional documentation, including proof of household size or need, is optional but encouraged. The organization stated that no one will be turned away solely for lack of documentation.

Appointments may be scheduled by calling (340) 776-0070. Walk-ins cannot be guaranteed service due to limited supplies and distribution capacity. Households may receive assistance once every 30 days, depending on available resources.

The Salvation Army St Thomas Corps is also seeking food donations, volunteers, and financial contributions to sustain the pantry and meet increasing demand.

The Salvation Army has provided food assistance, emergency relief, youth programming, disaster services, and other support across the United States and internationally for more than a century. The St Thomas Corps said it remains committed to serving the local community with compassion and integrity.
