On April 20, 2026, in St. Croix, the United States Virgin Islands’ Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett (D) and Senate President Milton Potter (D) announced their joint candidacy for governor and lieutenant governor of the United States Virgin Islands.
Plaskett has long been representing the territory in Congress. Over the years, she has worked on bringing federal money and support to the territory. In a release, Plaskett says she now wants to use her prior experience of “listening to families, business owners, students, and community leaders” to help lead the Virgin Islands from Government House.
Milton and Plaskett’s campaign aims to focus on helping everyday Virgin Islanders. Some of the main issues they have discussed include health care, electricity, government services, and ensuring public money is used well.
The two want to show that the government can and should do more than make promises. In their release, they shared their slogan: “People Powered, Ready to Deliver.” Their goal is for people to see real improvements in their daily lives.
Plaskett’s decision to run would move her from representing the US Virgin Islands in Washington, DC, to leading the territory directly. Voters will have to decide if her experience in Congress makes her the right person to become governor.
The 2026 governor’s race will focus on major problems in the US Virgin Islands, including the cost of electricity, health care affordability and inequity, jobs, and trust in government. Plaskett and Potter are presenting themselves as a team that can bring experience and change to the territory.
