On April 4, 2023, the United States Environmental Protection Agency announced a $45 million investment in drinking water infrastructure upgrades for the US Virgin Islands. The needed upgrades did not arrive in time, as a state of emergency was declared in November 2023 over dangerous levels of lead in St. Croix.
