On February 6, 1899, the United States Senate ratified the Treaty of Paris, ending the Spanish-American War, by a vote of 57 to 27, just over the two-thirds majority needed. Under the treaty, Spain relinquished any claim to Cuba and surrendered Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the US.
