Economic crisis protests escalate in Puerto Rico with general strike

by May 1, 2017Economy0 comments

Over the past weeks projects by the Puerto Rico House of Representatives and the Senate are now pending the approval of Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares. These projects have only increased the opposition towards the fiscal measures of the government and the Oversight Board.

Among these projects are the extremely controversial Project 938 from the House of Representatives, which alters public employees’ benefits, and the elimination of the Commission for the Audit of the Debt.

Today, International Workers’ Day, various worker’s organizations join protesting students of the University of Puerto Rico on a territory-wide strike. This strike involves a march that will take place on the Golden Mile (Milla de Oro, in Spanish) where the offices of the Oversight Board are located and the call for a boycott by abstaining from work, school and purchases of any kind.
